Air Fryer Chicken Sweet Potato Dog Chews
Air fryer chicken sweet potato dog chews are the perfect homemade treat for your pup. Sweet potatoes and chicken are both not only inexpensive, but they are easy-to-find ingredients that will make a healthy snack for your canine companion in less time than it takes you to drive to the store.
All you need is two ingredients, some water, an air fryer (or an oven), and about 30 minutes of time. This recipe can be adapted with different spices or other vegetables depending on what flavor your pup prefers – just make sure you follow our list of what is and isn’t safe for pups to eat.
Why Sweet Potatoes for Dogs?
Sweet potatoes are one of the healthiest vegetables you can serve to your pup. They provide a good amount of vitamins and fiber, with very few calories or carbs.
Why Chicken as a Protein?
Chicken is also an excellent choice for pups because it has a high protein content and low carb count – great for keeping them lean! Plus, they’re much less expensive than other protein sources like beef or pork. We don’t actually use chicken for this recipe though, but we use a dog-safe chicken broth.
Is all chicken broth dog safe?
No! Chicken broth from a can or carton is not safe for your pup to consume because it contains things like MSG and other additives that can be harmful. That is why we found a special, pet-safe, brand of chicken broth that you can use with no worries of hurting your pooch.
How to make sweet potato dog treats in air fryer?
One of the things I like the most about my Air Fryer is the “set it and forget it” concept. I can set the timer and move on to doing other things while that lovely little appliance keeps working for me. That is what helps make this sweet potato dog chews recipe so yummy.
How to store sweet potato dog treats?
Let them cool down first. Once they’re cooled, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They should last for about a week or more!

Easy DIY sweet potato dog chews
I know this says it takes three and a half hours to make – keep in mind that most of the work is done either while the sweet potato slices are marinating or while they are in the Air Fryer – so you have roughly only the time it takes to wash and slice your spuds – then the loading and unloading of the Air Fryer.
It is tough to tell how much this makes as it really depends on the size of the potato you use.
Sweet Potato Chicken Dog Chew Ingredients:
- 1 Large Sweet Potato
- 1 Cup Chicken Broth (a safe for dogs brand)
Best Sweet Potato Dog Chew Directions:
Step 1: Slice the potato into slices that are about as thick as a quarter. I find it best to use a mandoline to keep them evenly sliced.
Step 2: Pour broth over slices and soak for at least 3 hours or overnight. You may want to flip them a few times to make sure everything gets a chance to soak in the broth.
Step 3: Place the slices in the air fryer tray so that they do not overlap. Cook on 400 for 3 minutes then reduce heat to 300 and cook for another 5 minutes. If your slices are cut to think they may need to cook a little longer at the lower temperature.
Make sure you discard the leftover broth… that is always a safety step we take with any recipe that becomes a marinade.
